Because dogs often mirror the feelings of the individual, canine therapy can help teach emotion management. Usually, the calmer the individual is, the more agreeable the dog becomes. Canine Therapy can provide immense healing, with children and teens often responding particularly well to canine therapy and developing trust and strong bonds with the dogs.

For individuals with an affinity for animals, canine therapy can make a stressful experience easier and more pleasant, in addition to providing a source of confidence and confidentiality for those who may have experienced trauma or are unable to verbalize emotions. Dogs are used in therapy because they can assist in helping people relax, minimize stress, and offer a sense of safety and unconditional acceptance. As stated by the American Counseling Association, this can help draw withdrawn or non-communicative patients into conversation and the therapeutic process so they can get the most out of their therapy.
